Star ratings - what
are they?
The star ratings help you compare the energy efficiency or water conservation, along with the running costs. The more stars, the more efficient the product is, as well as the more money you will save in the long term. Investing in a quality product that will last longer, as well as has higher star ratings, will be the most sustainable option for your household.
Energy Rating
The energy star rating explains the energy efficiency of the product, so that you can compare energy use and running costs of the model before you buy the product. The more stars, the more efficient the product is when compared to other models of the same size. Generally, products have between 1-6 stars, however, you might even come across some products that have up to 10 stars (super energy efficient!). The energy consumption is how much electricity the model uses - the lower the number, the lower the running cost, the less you pay on your electricity bill.
Tip: by choosing a dishwasher with a lower energy consumption, you will save money in the long term by paying less on your electricity bill! We recommend choosing a dishwasher with at least a 3 star energy rating.
Water Rating
The water star rating will tell you how much water is saved per washing load. The more stars, the more water efficient and the more money you will save in long term. The rate of water consumption for dishwashers is the section in the middle, which tells you how many litres are used per wash, as well the capacity of the dishwasher.
Tip: decide the size of the dishwasher you need first, and then compare the water and energy star ratings of different models of the same size. We recommend choosing a dishwasher with at least a 4 star water rating.
How to choose an efficient dishwasher
Choose the appropriate size for your household - If you struggle to fill your dishwasher each time before you use it, you may want to consider purchasing a smaller model.
Regularly check the condition of your current dishwasher - broken seals or other body parts can consume more water and energy if not fixed or replaced.
Half-wash and economy (eco) wash options - these options allow you to reduce the amount of water and energy while using the dishwasher.
Hot and cold water connections - this means that the dishwasher will use hot water straight from your water heater, rather than heating up the water inside the dishwasher.
Choose a brand that can be recycled - by recycling your white-goods, you will be minimising your environmental impact by reducing landfill, reducing the waste of valuable resources, as well as reducing your greenhouse gas emissions that are associated with the production of new products + materials.
